You can do a simple search in google and find out that the music industry is in a bad way. Yes CD sales have fallen over the last 10 years or so, and the media tend to think that the shift to buy digital downloads will deem the CD obsolete. To a certain extent this could well be true. However, a large portion of the population have been downloading everything for free for years.
Alex White writes "The digital age in music sales, even with continuous growth, has not stopped the music industry’s recent sales losses. The growth rate for digital album sales has slowed from 32 percent in the first six months of 2008 to just 18.9 percent during the same period in 2009." This goes to show that even making things a little cheaper and more accessible makes no difference. People have to cut back.
With the current economic climate it comes as no suprise that a entertainment sector such as this has taken a hit because people can find the same thing cheaper or in this case free. With the amount of cutbacks on design and production is there any wonder that people don't value music. It's all over the radio, music channels, so why should people pay for it, when they can listen for free. Music is overpriced to start with, and think some people have had enough.
Myself personally, I always buy physical CD's of my favourite artists, obviously I could buy alot more if I had the money. Everyone looks for quality and sustainability when buying anything, so why not music aswell. A good compromise would be to release special edition CD's for fans and really go to town on the packaging.
